Spirituality is personal

I don’t fit well into boxes.

Being born in an ethnic family, I tried very hard to fit into the box of a ‘professional’ career that my parents wanted to keep me in. But my spirit squirmed trying to fit in there.

I knew I was meant for more. Be the free spirit I long to be.

Free spirit not in terms of wearing tie-dye clothes or jumping off cliffs. Not the free spirit who drives a Ferrari like it’s his pop’s road. A person’s image of a free spirit(& a lot of other things) would be based on their filter of unique experiences, how the experiences were navigated, and accumulated judgments(or life view).

Spirituality is no different.

Every place of worship, traditional or new-age, priest or guru; all have a cookie-cutter, an image to comply with. Somewhere it is symbols. Somewhere it is vermillion. Somewhere it is crystals. Somewhere it is dip-dye clothes that are not washed for days.

There are dress codes and expectations, sometimes overt and sometimes not. Much like the ‘culture’ that organizations often talk about.

Test driving different beliefs and systems for me simply felt like going from one cookie-cutter mold to another.

It finally hit me. Hard. True Spirituality is not this outer cover. It runs deeper than the surface shenanigans, that regardless turns to dust one day — whether you are buried or burnt or fed to the vultures(yes, there are such traditions).

Spirituality is an inside job that only you can truly experience.

It’s personal. It’s intimate. It’s deep. It’s your inner journey that only you can take.
